Farmall cub idler gear removal

I have to change the reverse idler gear bushing in my cub. What's the best way to go about changing that without splitting the tractor.

I do not think there is a way to do it without splitting the tractor. That gear and bushing is in the very bottom of the transmission and requires the entire transmission to be disassembled to replace. There were recent discussions about replacing that bushing on farmallcub dot com.

You don't have to split the tractor per se, but you do have to disassemble it from the rear forward. Both rear wheels have to come off. Both final drives have to come off. The platform has to come off. The right axle extension housing has to come off. Then you can take the transmission/differential housing off and put it on a bench to work on it.

Frankly I think that's an easier approach than splitting the tractor, because you can use the front of the tractor to "hang" all the parts as you take them off and put them back on.

All of these parts can be handled by one really strong guy or two reasonably strong guys or a home garage engine hoist. No special splitting stands necessary, just block up the tractor at the rear of the engine.
