A guy brought me the lower transmission shaft and wants me to press the constant gear on it. Can anyone tell me which way the gear goes on one hub is
longer then the other. The casting numbers are on the short side. any help will be appreciated.

Thanks Jim I looked there already. The problem I have is the hub on the gear is 1&1/2 long on one side of the gear and the other side 1&1/4 so I need to know which way to put it on.

I'm about 95% sure the long side is toward front. Is this a used gear where you can look at wear pattern to determine drive side of teeth. On a side note, I put a new Chinese gear in one of my H tractors and wish to heck I would have looked harder for a good used original one. New cost less than a used one so I though I was being good to it. It works alright but teeth are narrower and have a slight noise. Dumb.

Thanks for the reply pete I will put it on the long side to the front and if it is wrong he can take it apart again and I will change it. so thanks for the reply I will do it tomorrow and hope it is right.

With a 1/4" difference, my recommendation is to have him/her put the input shaft and drive constant mesh in the trans and measure to the case from the forward edge of a tooth. Then see which wy would near match that location on the counter shaft. Jim

Jim I was thinking on the same lines. I just got off the phone and told him what to do. Thank You
