856 power steering question

Hi folks,
I'm looking at buying an 856, the guy told
me that he had the lines replaced to the
power steering pump. The steering worked
fine before they were replaced. Well as I
was test driving it, the steering was very
jerky, also I thought that the breaks kinda
were jumpy also. The TA wouldn't shift,
however it was cold out and the tractor
wasn't warmed up. He said it would shift
with the tractor warmed up. He also said
the TA had been gone through a few years
ago and don't have much for hours on it.
I'm thinking there is air in the system,
but I just don't know. I'm not real
familiar with these tractors. Thanks!

In addition to Delta's good info, put in 5 extra gallons of HyTran. Hurts nothing and covers a potential suction side air leak into the hydraulic pumps. Jim

I would run it till it was good and warm and then change the hyd oil that way you will get more of the water out plus it will drain better

I wouldn't count on it being a simple issue, but it could very well be.

The reason I say this is because if the fix were simple, wouldn't it be in the best interest of the seller to make the simple fix? $50 in filters makes the tractor worth $3000 more than as it sits now.

To protect yourself, you need to assume that the seller has already tried the simple/cheap fixes and they did not work.

The steering should quickly self-bleed, so... who knows? Could still be air, or it could be totally screwed up somehow.

Everything should work, period. If the tractor needs to be warmed up to make things work, something is wrong. Could it just be water in the oil and a frozen filter? Maybe.

The price you pay should reflect its current condition and the cost of repairs that may need to be made on the tractor, not the "it'll work if you stand on your head and cluck like a chicken under a blood moon, I promise" price.

I agree with you on the pricing! I was
trying to figure out this guy..the tractor
has alot of minor issues that could have
been prevented and or taken care of
quickly. I'm not wondering if the tractor
was just used and not serviced regularly.
