Farmall A mag timing

Friend bought a used engine. We put it in today. Did not have spark. Put new points in and as spring was broke and wire was bare. Has spark now. Trying to time it now. On #1 TDC rotor is pointing at about 6 O'Clock. Everything I've read it should be 2 o'clock. Any thoughts would be appreciated. We went into this blind today and do not have a manual yet. Can these mags be put in 180 off without damaging anything? Slots appear to be in the middle.

if # 1 is at top dead center, then the rotor should be pointing near # 1 post on the distributor cap. i do not know how to tell you to place it
there.

There's always more than one position/arrangement of a mag or distributor and the spark plug wires that will work just fine.

Setting it up like it was when it left the factory is NICE and CUTE, and makes it less confusing for the next guy, but doesn't make it run any better.

If U R having issues, U mite want to peruse the official Blue Ribbon Service Manual, and set it up "as new".
Its official

Thank you for the replies. I have watched a few videos. I think I will try flipping it 180. I kinda like things the way they're meant to be. It looks like it should be straight up and down then you turn the mag until the impulse coupler snaps.
