Super M trans bearings

Hello friends. I'm in the process of rebuilding a 1953 Farmall Super M. Just got the block back from the machine shop. While it's torn down I want to replace the front bearings. (trans driving shaft, front and rear, and front countershaft bearing. In the pic you see on the bottom countershaft something they call a "nut' in the parts manual. Slotted so it can drive the belly pump. Any clues on how to remove it? Torch yes, given how long it's been on there, but is it right, or left hand thread. I appreciate all the help you guys always give me. Hope the picture loads!!! Thanks... Darryl P.S. Lots of wear on the nut where the seal contacts. Do they make a repair sleeve for this, Like they do for Chevy crankshafts where they contact the seal in the timing case cover? Again, many thanks

D,

It is lefty loosely best I remember on mine, but it took some blocking the tires, put in gear, and get a cheater pipe. That dude was oilfield tight.

Thanks

B

Hope this helps

I used a big Matco screwdriver about 3 foot long and the square shaft fits that nut. Lock the brakes, put it gear and turn it counter clockwise. You can also weld a piece of key stock to an old socket and hit it with an impact wrench.

If you own an impact wrench, just build an adapter that will fit into a socket, and remove the belly pump drive dog. Lefty loosey, righty tighty.

As others have said, it has right hand thread.
Looks like you have it torn down pretty far. If you already have the trans cover off you can engage two gears at once to hold the shaft or use a piece of brass to keep the countershaft gears from turning.
Last time, I think I used a piece of key stock and a piece of pipe.

A bearing supply house should have sleeves in different sizes. I have several times found that the grooves are in a location of the original leather seals and that a newer lip type seal will actually ride in a different location. It will take some measuring to figure out if that's true in your case. The newer seals are typically thinner than the original leather seals and you may some latitude if you need the seal to be a little more forward or a little more back to find a good spot to seal on.
