The early ones had the clamshell fenders, my 806 serial number 36844, which i bought 9-11-67 had the flat top fender's!

Probably was basic in its equipment ordered or the customer asked for the other options like three point, fast hitch, bare back. 34 or 38 inch rubber, C263,D282,D310, there may even had some C291 engines. Narrow or wide front. Some were dealer ordered. Cabs, corn picker use there were hundreds of reasons to equip one way or the other.Could be just cost.

Dad has a 67 German diesel that had clam shell fenders. Grandpa's neighbor, Maynard bought the tractor new. He wouldn't take it because he didn't like fenders. The dealer took square fenders off another tractor and swapped them. Afterwards the 706 had two head lights on the hood and two head lights on each fender.

The Flat tops were and Option In the last days in Aug of 1963 the first 806 showen in Ohio at the Canfield Fair and it had Flat tops , the man i worked for bought that tractor , now as for S/N i have no idea as we did not get all worked up over S/N's back then . I told my uncle about that tractor and told him that old G. F. had bought it before the fair even started and paid CASH for it on sight . One Wednesday after the fair my uncle went to G.F.'s farm and got to drive that tractor plowing . On Saturday morning i went with him to another I H dealer and when we pulled in the lot they were just unloading one off the truck , when my uncle asked who was getting that one and the owner said they did not yet have anyone in line for he told them to write it up check it out and have it at his place by afternoon and that one had Flat tops because it broke my heart to go and drill four hole in the right fender to mount the control valve set up for the tater harvester on it and by 2:30 Saturday after noon she was hooked to a John Beam two row harvester and digging taters . Now what i have seen over the years of tractor jockeying is that the ones you see with the clam shells and hood mounted head lights were the narrow ft. tractors and probably were bought new to mount pickers on . Now over the years it's hard to find a narrow ft. as some have been changed to wide ft. but that person may not have change to the flat tops . I have seen many that have flat tops and some still have the side lights and fender light , some have the fender lights but the org. mounting bracket and side panel is still there . To change from side mounted light to fender mount require a different wiring harness and a fender harness for each fender . Most 806's did not come from the factory with 18'4x38' and over the years this has been farmer change . Tractors from In. Ill and Iowa mostly had 34 inch rubber , Tractors out of Mich. and Ohio may area had the 38 inch rubber . Both of the 806 bought by my Uncle and my boss came with 16.9x38 and wer changed by spring to the 18'4x38 and axle duals added . My uncle had to see G.F.'s tractor on the 18'4x38's in the field plowing as he was sure that that tire was way to wide for a 16 inch plow as he said it would not fit in the furrow and worried they would be to large in the tater rows. So today when you look at and old tractor as it sets TODAY does not mean that it came from the factory that way . My 806 i have now came with a narrow ft and clam shells , now it has a correct for the model wide ft. and flat tops , but it still has the head light brackets and side panels for hood mounted lights , it has NOW the correct wiring harness for the fender lights and the fenders have the correct wiring harness for each . I could go buy the two side panels for flat top fender lights and remove the four screws and install the side panels remove the fast hitch and add a factory 3 point and then claim ah yea that's the way it came from the factory and who of you could tell that i changed the tractor from factory .
