we're trying to get a 1955 ih 300 utility tractor finished up we believe it needs valve guide seals, but i cant find any, online info claims this engine is the same as a farmall m, is it? if so where can we find seals, im basing valve guide seals on several things, the engine has good compression,[ average 100 psi on all 4] but it smokes, it runs great, [ propane since new] no popping thru either exhaust or intake, present seals are rock hard and probably factory original

A 300 engine is about 169 cubic inch, forget what an M is 248 maybe? Don't think either eng. came with valve seals but could probably use umbrella seals, the better seals may require some machine work to the head. A 300 is just a newer H.

There weren't any seals on it when new. IF there are seals on it now, then they were added, but Id bet you are seeing the original thinking its the seals. Where did you get your info? AN M engine is bigger than the 300, which would be basically an H engine on steroids.

A 300 engine is an H engine with a larger bore. It is a scaled-down version of the M engine. No valve guide seals from the factory. If the engine has them they would have been installed by whoever worked on the head. An engine shop would be able to identify them and supply replacements.

never had them and dont need them. valve seals give a puff of smoke when engine is accelerated. also if the valve guides are worn out its time for head work not just seals.
check the guides... remove valve cover get each cyl. on tdc on compression stroke. then just see if you can wiggle the valve stem. you should be able to see or feel a small amount of wiggle. dont want more than .003 of clearance. plus you say this is a propane powered engine , so you will have more wear happening than gasoline. propane is very hard on guides. when you have clearances in spec. you want a minute amount of oil for guide lube as propane is very dry with no lube in it. i have seen heads from propane and they are totally worn out.

A stock 300 is a C169 engine which is a descendant of the C152 engine in the H. Most new pistons and sleeves I have seen lately increase the bore a bit and make it 175 CI like the 350 had when new.

If that engine is a factory propane, that not enough compression, that barley a flat top piston for a gas engine!
