Burnt 584 let me down today

So I have been doing a bit of fence repair and have been using the loader bucket to carry the stuff I need out in the field. Went to start it back up to come in the do chores and it would not start. The solenoid clicks but the starter does not act like it is even trying to turn the engine over,. Didn't have time to trouble shoot it since it was of course at the far end on the field and I had to be up to the house in just a few minutes to do the chore so left it out in the field.

Hi Old, hope it is just a bad connection. Also hope it is a Delco starter not a Lucas one. My brother has had to replace the solenoid of his CIH 3230 (newer model of 584) but it has a Lucas starter. Lucas parts are more difficult to find than Delco parts.

Ya good chance it is a simple battery cable connection. After I got back up to the house and thought about it some and the fact that is could use the start wire only on the battery to make the solenoid click says + cable not making good contact. This tractor has almost no wiring to it due to the fire so it has a wire from the alternator to the battery and a wire from the solenoid which I use to start it with and the simple excite wire I touch to the post on the alternator to excite it so it charges. No switches of any sort just to wires I hook up and unhook to make things work

This tractor has run real well up till today so it is likely to be something simple

I no longer have a way of posting pictures due to this being a new computer and all my camera set ups are to old to work

I had to replace my starter on my 784 this past fall. It was 175 to rebuild the lucas or 190 for a new delco. I went with the delco. I have a new starter solenoid for a lucas if anyone needs one.
