rboots : I am no expert and would like not to have to pull the cab. when we tested it we could not get anything out of either wheel, the left side did act like it wanted to do something but never and that was holding the brake on each side. I post this problem earlier and some felt it was the differential, I am not sure myself, when I bought the tractor at auction they said it was being used and the guy heard a loud pop and stopped moving. this fall I hot pressured washed and there was a lot of oil coming from under the cab so I was going this route so a person can fix all the problems. and if it is the differential the only way I see to get it out is from the top. I may be wrong, and I am open for ideas.
while on the subject of the cab if I do take off what are the best lift points? like I said I plan to repaint when it back together. like I said feel free as I'm on uncharted ground on this, I do have a IH blue ribbon book on this. thanks

Have you drain the rear oil and check for Metal one way you could check for the differential is take the top Link off the six bolts and have somebody up in the cab and you look at the differential when he puts it in gear and at the differential turns and the wheels are on the ground that means the cross is out of the differential I have worked on those for 45 years Farmer said they hear a pop and Quit moving you do not have to take the cab off you have to take the fuel tank off and blocked up the rear end or have a splitting stands for the rear You have to make a stanza hold the cab up if you?re just replacing the differential you do not have to split it That?s how I?ve always check to see if the differentials out

ihtimmy : I can do it this way but want to make sure I understand. I guessing both axles come off and were to you pull the differential out so you can work on it? there were a lot of shaving in the right side, do you think I should rebuild the pumps due to this?

Our 1066 had filings in the right side [bull gear].
Ended up being the brake shaft bearing.

Don't know about the 15s----planetary finals &
whatever.

OK block up the rear in safely and remove the Wheels raise the cab up a few inches remove the fuel tankRemove the cab mounts take the top three point cover off take the rear axle housings off takeTake the gears off the side of the tractor with a cherry picker and I?ve always used a pretty heavy rope takeAround the differential and hold the the differential up you have to take the lube pipe off That goes into the left differential bearing support that remove the bearing support and left it out with the cherry picker for the hydraulic pumps it depends but I would pull the rear hydraulic pump off because you have to remove the fuel tank to get it out and this would be a good time due to look at it and it depends how the steering was You might want to take the hydraulic pipes off to get the top three point cover off

I would fully start by pulling the RH axle housing/final drive. See if maybe you have a broken bull pinion or something as such. If you had a broken bull pinion, applying the brake would have no effect on making the other side turn, which will just continue to allow the side with the least load to turn. But, like Timmy says, also pull the 3 point top link cover and see if the differential is turning while it is in gear. Any idea if the clutch hub ripped out of the disc? Probably not the issue, but something to think of

Pull the top link cover for the 3 PT you can see the pinion gear in there with a light. Also the ring gear. If they look ok then decide from there. If bad then need to pull cab to get out the top. Pulling axle will not let you see the ring and pinion gears. Don't pound endways on the axle to get the wheel castings off either the sating is quite thin holding the inside bearing and can be broken that way. The plate for the wedge removal is the best method. We made a set up for our 1466 can't remember just what we used except it was a 3/4 or inch plate for it. If the wdges are not out near the side of the casting they need changed as they don't pull up correctly for tight. I have seen shims put in on top of the ramp to fill the wear.
