Have a farmall m that pops out of road gear will stay in if you hold it in gear otherwise will pop out what is the best case and worst case and what would be involved repairing it

Thanks

More then likely due to extencive field testing of that tractor and the many times it was ground into road gear my guess is that the input shaft and fourth and fifth sliding gear is well rounded and there is not enough meat left on either .

The Vet is correct. it usually moves about 1/2 to 5/8 inch at the top rubber knob of the lever as it goes into gear. If when it jumps, it moves 1/4 inch as it pops out, that is the issue. if it moves the 1/2 inch, the center pilot bearing and or the front input shaft bearings could be bad. It can be fixed without a split. Belly pump taken out, top off of the platform. Jim
