Farmall 230 steering rebuild

I?ve pulled the steering assembly a part on this tractor. The housing was dry and the seal around the worm shaft had gone bad. In the process
I?ve removed the entire assembly. The IT manual indicates this can be rebuilt by pressing off the bearings and the worm gear. Does the upright
on the steering worm wheel shaft go completely through the assembly? I?m assuming so, and therefore that is the location press out the
bearings and seals. My concern is supporting that assembly during the press. I?m attaching a photo that shows a crack in the bottom plate
adjacent to the wheel stop. My thought is that this is what I support to press against. I believe I have found a replacement for it, but before I
get too far down the path of destruction, I?m asking if anyone has pressed these apart and suggestions.. Photo of the assembly and the crack
plate are attached.

I can`t answer your questions as I took mine to a machine shop to take apart. I just wanted to let you know to note how the steering gear is on there now and when you press it back on, turn it 180 degrees on the shaft. This will give you the unworn side of the gear to use and when it`s all back together, your steering should have less slop.

Thank you. It appears Farmall originally painted witness marks that should help with that. This was my Grandfather?s tractor. Both he and my father (the only two men who would have done this work) are gone now, and I don?t recall that this was ever rebuilt. Particularly with all the seals having the original part numbers stamped into them.

A quality bearing splitter is needed. It will go under the bearing, then under the gear. to support them in a press. The use of a propane torch directed to the balls of the bearing and inner race will help get the bearing off. Heating the gear will probably also assist in its removal. keep heat off of the shaft as that should remain as cool as possible to keep it small while the heated parts expand. Jim

Thank you.

I knew there was something that was missing but I couldn?t quite get a hold of it. That splitter will end up in my tool box soon.
