169c.i.d. I.H. engine in Joy air compressor

Folks, I just drug in a Joy Brand 150 cfm compressor with a 169 c.i. 4 cylinder I.H. engine, as far as I can puzzle out the same as a Scout 800 engine. Other than blowing out the dust and critter nests, I haven't started in on it, but am sure I will be into the motor some. The distributor (It has a factory I.H. electronic ignition module) was removed years ago, but I found it laying in one of the toolboxes, so there is hope. The fuel pump was disconnected, and there are a couple of obvious hot wire attempts at bypassing the ignition. It appears that someone inflicted a brief, chaotic, furious, and unsuccessful troubleshooting attempt, then gave up.
Questions:
Should I just buy a Scout service manual, or try to find specific industrial engine specs?
Did I.H use the same nomenclature for this as the tractor engines, as in C169?
I don't suppose any of you would have any Joy G150S service data I could purchase???? (hey, a guy can dream,....)
Any favored vendors for 169 engine parts?
Any tips specific to this engine that has been dormant for decades?

Thanks for any and all help. Jeff

Your 196 is simply half of a 392 IH gas V8. And basic tune-up or OH "specs" for a 392 should work for your half-a 392.

IH used some really weird Holley E.I.'s that it's tough to get parts for now.

It would be interesting if you can post photos of the distributor and EI module, I probably have schematics I could scan and forward to you, if, in fact, it's a Holley system

Or, there's possibly a "workaround" if the pickup coil or module are bad.

Here are shots of the distributor tag and the distributor. The ignition module is a gold box with four wires leading to a molded connector, I will try to get a shot of it when I am near the compressor. From the numbers, I gather it may be a Holley distributor, but please advise if this is incorrect. Given the evidence (coil hanging loose, EI hanging off with a sheetrock screw, loose grounds,....) I am tempted to pull the ignition components and do some bench testing. There may be nothing wrong with them. All comments and help welcome. jeff

Yes, that appears to be a Holley EI. MAY work, if you can get it wired up properly, remind me to scan and post a diagram.

OR, I'm not always a Pertronix fan, but for the V8 versions of that setup they have a unit that mounts in the distributor in place of the Holley HE ignition pickup and replaces the wiring harness and the $$$ and sometimes failure-prone "gold box".

It would be worth calling them to see if they can supply a version for your 4-cylinder (would require a different "magnet ring".

If I forget to post back, you can email me, [email protected].
