Used my 856 the other day and I heard a clunking sound that appears to be under the tractor, more so on the right side
as you are sitting on it. The next day I used it to more a disk about a 1/2 mile. no noise. I plowed a fence line
about a mile no noise. I used it again today and it made the sound again, about every 6 seconds more or less. I picked
up a round bale and moved it a good way, a couple of times today it did not make any noise for a while, then it would
start again. I am assuming there is a gear with a broken tooth. I have never opened up a rear end of a tractor before,
any suggestions. Thanks

Check for loose lug bolts and or loose wheel weights.

Many years ago, customer was complaining about a click in rear of his new tractor. I went out there and tried to duplicate the noise he was hearing. He said it was from the right rear side. I did many donuts in his yard and no noise. Finally, after several questions I was able to figure out he was hearing the hitch reacting while he was plowing using draft control. Told him to just leave that one lever all the way down and end of problem.

Only reason I bring this up is you said you were moving a round bale. If that hitch settles an inch and corrects it's self you will get a pretty good clunk. One chance in a whole lot that this is your problem but just something to keep in mind as you didn't hear it when pulling the implement.

Most likely wheel but don't overlook front wheel also.

I might add here , does your tractor have the spring loaded park loc????? Twice now on two of our tractors , 1 1066 and my 806 both have the spring loaded park loc.'s and with them they are either all the way off or all the way on and hardly any room for not being all the way off. Due to ware in the linkage they can start clicking to sounding really bad . as there is NO ADJUSTMENT and they give no warning on when they get a little extra ware , the ware can be in the mounting bolt that the park release lever mounts on it could be at either end where the rod goes thru the holes on the lever or at the piviot point going into the range transmission . On my 806 to repair it i had to go find a lever and mounting bolt and buy a new park loc assembly as they do not offer just the rod to get it to stop clicking , really it was more then just a clicking . Make sure your park loc is all the way up and see if this makes and difference .

I agree.

When I started plowing with a semi-mounted plow with an 856 I once had, I kept hearing an intermittent groaning noise in the rear end. I finally figured out it was the draft control working the 3 point arms up and down to keep the plow level.
