Funny Starting H Follow - UP

I few weeks ago I posted about one of my Super Hs that wouldn't start normally, I had to keep the throttle fully closed in order for it to fire up, and no choke. When it did start if I tried to advance the throttle it would stall instantly...once fully warm everything was normal in running and starting. Well I finally had time today to get it in the shop and check it. I had asked for guesses as to what it could be. Someone had guessed the choke plate screws had fallen off, CLOSE, the choke shaft is broken ! Inside the carb hole that is, so the lever and rod looked to be working ok, even had the normal amount of resistance, but the choke plate wasn't moving at all. Now how to repair it, braze ? , JB weld ? , or do one of you guys have one to sell me ? Thanks , Mike

I made a new rod for mine. 1/4" rod and a lot of careful filing.
I saved the bellcrank from the old shaft and soldered it onto the new shaft.

I had not posted on this before, but I have a 140 tractor that acted just as you described. It had a flapper plate and spring on the choke plate. The spring on the flapper was gone allowing the flapper to open and prevent it from choking. I got a new choke plate with the spring and flapper from McDonald carb. The had just the spring, but the minimum order was $5 so I ended up ordering the whole assembly. I bet you can get the choke shaft for your carb from McDonald.

I have encountered a few H and M carburetors with the arm either welded or brazed to the shaft. I've also found several brand new, aftermarket choke levers that needed that repair, right out of the box.
