When did they start using the turbo

Post on tractor talk about turbo on an H got me to thinking. The IH dealer used to bring hoods to body shop to be reworked when they installed turbo. They had to be cutout on side and if I remember we plated in original exhaust opening then repainted the hoods. We did several of them but don't remember the model, it was late 1970s or maybe early 1980s.

If I recall I have M&W Gear turbo instruction books for 560, 656, 706, 806, 856, and 1468 V-8. Might be off a model or two though. Most showed moving the exhaust hole, but some did try to go out the original hole.

I have worked on too many things since then, not even sure about the years it could have been late 1960s. We were also doing some work for JD at the time and using their paint also. The DuPont rep. got us using their hardener in both the red and green dealer paints. I think we cut out about 5 or 6" opening on the side with oval cut on top.

The 1206 in 1965 was the first IH to come from the factory with a turbo. I think the first factory produced turbocharged tractor was the Allis D19 which came out in 1961 10,500 some built. The first turbo Deere was the 1969 4520. I recalled from memory the IH an D19, had to look at tractor data to confirm the 4520. The years they all were produced came from tractor data as well. So flame away. I?m not sure if this is what you were looking for.

IH made factory turbo kits for the 560,660, and probably 656/706 for high altitude operation using factory parts for the D282 engine used on an IH crawler tractor. The 560/660 kit was distinctive because a dry type air cleaner was mounted on top of the hood just a couple feet ahead of the steering wheel. Same turbo kit probably worked on the 460-D too since D-236 was just a short stroke version of the D-282.

If you put a M W on a 560 used the same hole.656 &706 you cut a new hole to the right of existing hole.806 856 same hole,706&756 German same hole .560 with cat turbo moved up forward with a bigger hole and curved pipe. And the first 560 with cat turbo used existing oil bath cleaner but with turned up pump it would pull oil out of the oil bath. Then they came with dry cleaner.

Here is the IH high Altitude set-up.
