I've been trying to track down where to find new expansion plugs for the engine block on my MD. Called the CNH dealer and they no longer carry them in stock. Is there another source anyone else has used to get new ones? Thanks

NAPA and engine rebuilding stores have them very common component. Bolt in expandable plugs are also common. Look for Disk type Welch plugs. Jim

Looks like the part # you posted is for a brass plug. ANY autoparts store should have one in steel, if that will work for you.

The CIH/FIAT # for a 1-3/4" STEEL plug is 172578.

Or, you can get a brass one from Melling resellers.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

If any sealant is used around the edge, what would you recommend?

A thin coating of Permatex #2 (non Hardening) against the corner where the welch plug will seat works well. Jim
