changing oil in air filter bowl

have been reading on here about M not starting and was suggested to clean air filter bowl of crud in the oil. I have a Super A and was wondering how often should this oil be replaced and what I'm looking for as far as crud. I don't use this tractor much, about twice a year plowing garden and then disking garden. About every other year I belt it up to a sorghum mill. Other than that it sits in garage. I do get it out about every 2 months and start it and let run to keep things lubed and charging. Pembroke

Well, the owner's manual (you should get one) recommends changing the oil in the air cleaner daily, but obviously that makes no sense if you are not using the tractor daily.

When new, the tractor would be operated 8-12 hours in dusty conditions every day, so that is likely where the recommendation comes from.

It is fairly simple to pull the oil cup and look. It does not take much oil to change it out. When you dump the old oil out, any crud collected in the bottom of the cup will be obvious.

It only takes less than a quart. All the dust that is sucked up gets trapped in the oil. the oil also washes the mesh screen out as well. However after time the screen gets dirty, sometimes plugged. After you remove the bowl, look up at the screen. Some screens are removeable for cleaning. Not sure about an M.As was said, change the oil each time you change engine oil. In your case, yearly.

I your case the biggest problem is likely to be condensation so you end up with water in the oil bath cup which can cause odd problems. You might want to check it at least once maybe twice a year and make sure the oil cup has not become over full due to condensation

Comments so far are great. The oil should be cheap 10-30 oil (the book will say use the engine oil. Modern multi weight oil is
perfect. since the oil does not lubricate anything, use cheap oil. Jim

thanks for all the replies. I have a manual if I can find it. I look at it when it warms up a little. Right now it's not going anywhere. 11 degrees. Thanks again. Pembroke

All of the older oil bath air cleaners that I am familiar with, recommend changing the oil when the dirt is a 1/2 inch deep.I change mine when I change engine oil-usually about 1/4 inch of dirt, on a working tractor.Mark
