Farmall A /Super A interchange parts

Guys,

I'm working on my A. It has a super a motor on it with a cracked block and cracked head. I am planning on going back with an A motor. I have a few questions on what would interchange:

Rocker arm assembly?
Push rods?
Cylinder head?

Thanks

An A engine would most likely be a C-113 while a Supper A could be a C-113 or C-123. As Gene says, just compare and verity. Most parts would have a part number to compare.

The A and Super A have fundamentally the same engine. The key difference is the Super A block has a provision for the hydraulic pump. Shortly into Super A production, the head was changed slightly (upped the compression ratio I believe). Even then, the heads interchange. You may have to keep a few parts under the valve cover with the head they were originally paired (the hollow stud, not sure about push rod and valves, check a Super A parts catalog).

Both came with a 3" bore (113 ci). Either can be fitted with 3-1/8" sleeves bumping it up to 123ci. In 1951, the factory started using the Super C block with the larger lower bore but used thicker wall sleeves to maintain the 3" bore.

Any of them chould have a water pump back-fitted. You need to use the proper head gasket based on whether there is a pump or not. The water pump is rarely needed. It is less expensive to flush the cooling system every 15 or 20 years, whether it needs it or not.

If you are going to keep the same cylinder head, it should not matter which block you use. Different heads used different length push rods - but if you keep the head you have you should be okay. Depending on which block you have, you may need different sleeves - but as long as you're rebuilding the engine you'll probably use new sleeves anyway. While you're rebuilding the engine, you might also get new camshaft bearings too - then you'll basically have a new engine.
People have told me it is a good idea to use a water pump, it keeps the cylinder head temperature even - and keeps it from overheating and possibly cracking.
