Hey guys want thank everyone for wireing info the other day Iam about to get couple? Have a 1948 Farmall C I put new one wire alt Delco used the no 10gage wire does that require a in Line fuse if so what size also where all my gages go there was a fuse holder the one that goes through hole with nut to hold it on it wasn't hooked up when I got tractor what was that fuse for Thanks Merry Christmas

No fuse needed in the alternator output line. By design the alternator is inherently self-limiting. Further if there IS a fuse and it blows while the alternator is charging, it can destroy the alternator.

The accessory fuse holder should get a 20 amp (SFE 20) fuse.

I (with no malice) disagree with Bob on the fuse link. Putting a Removable tab fuse, or fuse link in the alternator output, at the alternator location, that is 5 amps over the alternators output rating can prevent a toasted alternator if someone connects jumpers or a new battery backwards. Many manufacturers use them on new vehicles, so their purpose is reasonable. The alt is self regulating, but people are not. Jim

Good point Jim!

My recommendation is from first hand experiences with 60's - 70's era alternators. I smoked several (including on my Mom's '65 Dodge station wagon) by disconnecting alternator/battery wiring at the wrong time.

Thinking about the reality of it, it seems to me that almost all Hitachi and 10SI applications we discuss are fed info on the sense terminal from the output stud. If it was connected to the Bat at the starter, it might be an issue, but I would rather replace a fuse than an alt, or a whole burnt tractor. Jim

A fuse with the capacity greater than the maximum alternator output is not going to protect the diodes if a battery is connected backwards.

All 6 diodes in the bridge and the trio would simultaneously conduct. I think they would handle the 5 amp over current for the
milliseconds it took to blow the fuse. Just an opinion, not ever tested. The fuse links in vehicles with them are above the max
output of the alternator, to the best of my knowledge. Jim
