Farmall 400 and M-water pump packing and brass gland

What are some of your experiences with replacing/servicing the packing and adjusting the gland nut behind the fan? I have done one on my 400 and one on my buddy's M. Both were weeping and the gland couldn't be tightened. When disassembled for repair the gland was very tight on both models and what packing was left seemed to be supplemented with gray paste pipe thread compound. The instructions that came with the packing said to leave the gland loose so that it would soak and seep some when first run and then tighten enough to stop the leak. They make no mention of pipe thread compound. I found the correct spanner wrench on Ebay which has helped the process. My question is should I have used some pipe thread compound? My 400 still weeps a bit after tightening after the first start up. We are still reassembling the M. What have you done? Merry Christmas!

What did you use for packing as the OEM do not come with instructions. The gray stuff you are asking about is just the old packing and what it was made out of. I have rebuilt a lot of pumps and just tighten up till they stop so did you use the correct packing?

Yes , I used OEM part number 50790D for the second pump. The first one I may have used an aftermarket product that came with instructions but it was the same "wick" type packing. They looked identical with an angular cut at the joining end.http://www.batescorp.com/cart/images/thumbnails/280/280/detailed/49/50790Da.jpg

Great question. Hoping you get some answers. I too thought you could just tighten up till it quit.

Can someone tell me the purpose of the packing?
