Recommendation requested for mechanic in middle TN

Hello! I am a new Farmall 140 tractor owner. It is a nice, all original tractor. I am hoping for recommendations for a mechanic where i live, near Nashville, TN. I don't know where to start as the typical large new tractor dealers probably won't carry parts. Thanks for your time.

First things first you are mistaken. You can get many of the maintenance items and many repair parts from your local CaseIH dealer. Fluids, filters, ignition parts, carburetor kits are all regularly stocked.

You will need to provide them with a year to avoid confusion with the "current" Farmall 140A model.

Generally speaking there are not many freelance tractor mechanics around, and those that are around do not work cheap. If you're expecting someone to come and work on your tractor for $10 an hour, you're going to be disappointed. Mechanics tend to charge upwards of $100 an hour plus service charge to come on site, and some even charge travel time. Performing routine maintenance could quickly exceed the value of the tractor, and it's not that complicated, so consider performing it yourself.

You need to find some retired mechanic who supplements his income by doing maintenance to light repairs at your site. I have been doing this now for just ending 18 years since I retired from IH , John Deere dealer. Actually very little last two years and virtually nothing now, too old. I started out charging $15 and moved to $20 an hour.

No charge for travel time but limited myself to reasonable drives like under 20 miles. Most people would throw in a little extra. Also, had lot of good coffee breaks off the clock. I could spend all afternoon on a job and charge for two hours. Boy, that felt good. After having the next to last employer being on your but all the time for 100 percent accountability for time at work. Some of my jobs , first couple years, were at a independent shop, jockey so to speak. He said, punch the time clock to keep track of how long you are on that job. I told him, I don't do time clocks anymore.

My poor old pickup is still loaded down with tools that I use for my own work now, on the pickup mostly. People say I'm nuts for not charging more. I say, I'll charge what I think is fair. Wife gets on me when I say I charge what I'm worth. Problem is , I'm broke so you can see how that works out for charging what you think you are worth, so I guess you will have to expect to pay more than I charge. Good luck finding someone.

my recommendation would be first to buy an operator's manual for the tractor. This site may carry them, sometimes on ebay. Next get all the service books you can find. Original IH service books or copies thereof are best but at least and IT manual. This will give you a start until you find a mechanic and when you do find one, will help him in solving any problems

Mcchenry tractor tractor can help

What's your complaint with it, maybe all you need is some eBay manuals and a little study time, doubt if there's any shortage of parts.

Your local large CaseIH tractor dealer will have or can get all of the parts you need. Try them first. They could probably recommend a local mechanic also.

In my my experience, if you are going to own an old tractor, you need to learn how to fix them yourself. Otherwise, the cost of having an old tractor and having someone else do the work will just get
outrageous as old tractors break all the time. If not, in the long run, probably cheaper to buy a brand new one.
