Farmall 504 jumps out of third gear

The trans should stay in gear for two reasons, the first is that the gear and its mating gear are flat toothed and not subject to forces pushing on them sideways. the second is the detent balls and springs in the shifting rails. These drop into recesses in the rails and position the moving gear correctly while retaining it in that spot with modest force. Jumping out under load is usually caused by worn gears or bearings that allow the teeth to work out of position, or weak or broken detent springs. Jim

Does it also tend to jump out of 2nd gear? That would indicate to me bad detent spring or ball.If only 3rd,then I would suspect the 3rd speed gear to be 'walking' on the mainshaft.Mark
