Tearing down a SM motor , it has M & W pistons I want to save . Two are stuck bad , can they be removed out the bottom ?
It would be much easier to get the block in my press to push them down .

I don't think you can get them out of the bottom. If they are really stuck, I'd push the piston and sleeve out the top together. Then cut the sleeve carefully down the sides with a grinding wheel. Split the sleeve and the piston should be as salvageable as it is going to be. We did this with a high dome piston from an H and saved the one that was stuck. Just need a sleeve.

Let me clarify, if you have the block completely torn down and the crank out then yes, you would be able to press down on the piston. But I'd think you would have a better chance of breaking the piston that way. I'd push them up together and then soak them before cutting away the sleeve.

Yes the crank is out . The pistons are at the bottom so I think they will come out easier that way . I just didn't know if they would clear the mains

well i don't think so . If they are at the bottom then take a deglazing hone to the sleeves and remove as much rust as you can , Now me i would use my joy juice and let it set for a bit then i would do some warming and add some more joy juice along with some added assistance from my favort your going to move sucker collection.
Ya know the phone Number.

I've pressed them out of the bottom side before. Just pay attention to everything going on so the rod doesn't catch on anything. Keep in mind if it does pop loose, maybe work it back and forth if you can.

Be safe

Matt Es idea makes a lot of sense, but l would at least try pressing them down but only using light
to moderate pressure. I feel one of the key things to success when doing this is getting the piston
to move ever so slightly then use your favorite penetrating juice to soak them, l?m a fan of Hagen?s
brew atf and acetone. The slight movement will help break the sealing bond of the iron oxide build
up..rust... allowing the lube to get in into the ring section. That?s the area that needs lube during
the removal if you are wanting to save the pistons. SW EM has a good point about the honing as
well. If it taking over moderate pressure to move Matt Es solution might be best. You may need to
sacrifice the rod to the torch to get a puck on the bottom of the sleeve. Now I?m not sure if in an M
if the piston is down at the bottom of the stroke if the piston skirt comes out of the sleeve a bit or
not if so disregard the last statement. Another option would be a pipe machined to fit the bottom of
the sleeve provided it will fit over the big end of the rod. Been a while since I?ve seen the bottom
end of an M engine. Kind of speaking in generic engine break down terms. My 2 cents worth.
Good luck!

I pushed out some stuck pistons out through the bottom once on an M . Broke off the lip on the sleeves on every cylinder that was stuck.
