Well bought a 400 Farmall diesel. Nice old tractor. Discovered that it doesn't run to well on #4 cylinder. So decided to give it an over-haul. Well can't find cylinder kits for
the old gal. Anyone out there help me out? yesterdays tractors only gas, Steiner tractor no go. Tried All States tractors. Mark

have u checked the compression on it? parts are scarse. what is it doing? could be an injector. need more info than that.

Parts are scarce, and EXPENCIVE.Dont tear it apart till you you find/have parts. You may end up like me,tractor torn apart,no parts to rebuild it.It's probably just junk now. :(

This is on an MD. It was stuck.has two cracked sleeves, minor head cracks. I would fix it if I could.....

There have not been any NEW parts made for any of the gas start I H diesels in 40-45 years . so what is left in new old stock is all that is out there . at one time i talked with cleveitte about doing a run on 4 and 4 and 4 1/8th sleeves and pistons rings and bearing sets starting a .010 over and they would do this IF i placed and order for a half mil . for just the sleeves and pistons . sorry guys i am not big of a high roller.

I would think you should be able to find parts yet. I had my SMD completely rebuilt in 2011 or '12. Most of the parts came from PowerMax Tractor parts, who I believe has recently been bought out by Reliance. I needed oversized sleeves, so those were custom made by L.A. Sleeve. The last time I checked, Reliance showed parts available. Webers Tractor Works has N.O.S. parts from time to time. I never checked, but had also read that CIH may still offer piston and sleeves. The only thing that was really hard to find was the one cam bearing, but we ended up finding one.

HTH,
Dan

If that is all you need, I'm sure you could get those items fixed if you want to spend the money. If you have to have sleeves made, that cost me $1500 for the set of 4. I was told any head could be fixed correctly for around $1,000. A furnace welding process or something like that. This info was from my experience a few years ago.

Before work suggest checking for starting valve closing or leaking on the cylinder. If it will crank engine a few times with lever in gas run mode you should show no compression at spark plug hole. Pull injector out and reattach to line with can or bucket under it and watch spray. Don't put hand near injector when running. Discarded injector body can be used to make a hook up for checking compression if you have a gage high enough. Don't remember the place, but was informed of a place selling P&S sleeve a week or so ago. Could also piece them from dealer not long ago.

A quick look on my reliance web sight shows sleeves are available, pistons are special order. Head set available. Everything is extremely expensive though.

Wow thanks guys for all the replys. Haven' pulled the injector yet but did a running compression on number 4 in gas mode and its about 50 psi. The others are about 75. Put some oil in the hole and it jumps up to about 65. Tells me its rings. Did roll it over with the lever in the diesel position and no compression showed up in the decompression chamber. The head was replaced with a new one a few years back as its a different color. Funny I talked with a few places that handled old tractor parts and they said I should pretty much get anything I need for it. Will try reliance.Mark

$300 per sleeve from Reliance when I did mine last year. Very cringeworthy every time I needed to buy something for my MD.

ya 50 lbs. is low. also can check those little gas valves just by removing spark plugs when running on diesel.should have no leakage what so ever coming out. more important to get the diesel compression checked though. but if that cyl. is low on gas be low on deisel and just not enough to fire the diesel. pull the valve cover and do a valve adjustment on it as could be just a tight valve. as your saying head was replaced. do the easy stuff first before jumping the gun.

Good thought rustred. Will switch the injectors around but don't think will do it. Checked with Reliance. They have parts made over seas when they run out. For Sleeves, pistons, rings, gaskets, rods and mains. $4805. Plus freight. The head redone and I am going to use $6000.00 No one tell my wife if I am going to do this. Just kind of hooked on getting the old thing to run right. Love the sound of that old engine when they run right... Mark

Delta, I know of sleeve/piston sets for them, but would require having to open the parent bores and counter bores. The sets are the 4.125 sets for a d281 (450d). Send me a email if you want the info. Jim.
