Timing 350 gas utility

Need help! I?m going to attempt to set the timing on my 350ih utility. I believe it?s close just seems to be running rich and pings. Should the rotor be pointing at cylinder #1 when the pulley is at (TDC) or 22deg advance? Any help would be greatly appreciated

If you are "static timing" it, meaning it's not running while you are setting the timing, rotor will be pointing to #1, and breaker points will just open enough to break contact @ TDC.

When you start it and get to high idle, and check it with a timing light it will have advanced to 22? BTDC (or to whatever degree the distributor has been "curved" to).

Bob, just to make sure i am doing this right (Static test) I?ve got it set at TDC and and The rotor is just passed the contact for #1 plug wire approximately 1/16? pass.

And what?s considered high idle for setting the advanced timing with a timing gun?

Thanks

Rotor position isn't accurate enough for static timing. As I previously wrote, spark occurs when the points just break contact, and that what's important, can be determined with a non-powered test light connected to the distributor's primary terminal.

I don't have the manual at hand for an exact speed, but (typically) by 3/4 throttle or so, all the centrifugal advance has "come in" and timing doesn't advance any more with an increase in engine speed.

W.O.T. to check advance. to tell when the distributer is in correct position... you can remove cap , turn on ignition, then rotate dist. oppositte of it normal rotation. as soon as you hear the spark that is your spot. or you can put a piece of paper between the points and do the same , when you can pull the paper out thats the spot. you cant tell a thing just by looking at rotor.

Dear Bob, You seem extremely knowledgeable in many areas and different brands. How did you acquire this knowledge and thanks for sharing it on these forums. I have known some gifted mechanics, but most would only reveal their secrets to a son.
