656 gas hydro starter issue

I'm working on a 656 gas with the hydro. Serial number 32493. The old starter and ring gear were in bad shape so I replaced the starter and installed a new ring gear on the flywheel. Ring gear was the same part number that was on the flywheel before. Went to start the tractor and it's turning the engine over but it's wanting to grind.!Anybody else had this issue? Any help would be great!

Wrong starter. It is the drive actually but either starter number may work if it has the correct drive for that starter. It is a mixed up affair on that tractor as well as the 706. I know that either starter will work on 706 tractors as ring gear is same on all gas but starter cone is different to make up for the different number of teeth on drive. I have seen wrong drives put I both 706 and 656 tractors from rebuilders.

Ok. The old starter I took off had 9 teeth. The new starter has 9 teeth. I noticed on the new starter has a different hose cone. Do you happen to know the starter number I need? Thank you!

I ran into this before there is three drives for 656 and the nosecone is different the drives may look like the work but They have the same amount of teeth the pitch Is different and the Diameter is different works on the certain nosecone
