Another Governor Problem

I'm having a problem with surging on my Super C. It usually begins on bumpy terrain or a slight load. It will smooth out under a hard load, such as applying both brakes. I tried adjusting the governor by removing the acorn nut on the bottom, and making adjustments a half turn at a time. I took the cover off and replaced the governor spring. The upper spring arm and the governor arm that connects to the carb rod were worn, and they were replaced as well. No change. Does anyone know where I should look next? Thanks in advance!

Are you saying you replaced the spring under that acorn nut that you are adjusting on or the main governor spring. I find most of those bumper springs broken many years ago.

When you disassembled the governor, did you remove and inspect the needle bearing on the long shaft (about 6-7 inches long) that has the arm on the outside that connects to the linkage that goes to the carb. I have found that this shaft gets ruff where these needle bearings support the shaft.

I did not remove the bearing, but the arm movement seemed smooth. I may end up taking the cover off again and giving it a closer look.

If you didn't take that bumper screw out to make sure spring is good, I would do that before taking governor apart again. Most any spring that is close to what is in there works fine. Then just keep screwing it I until surging stops or rpm's start to increase. To far in will keep you from low idle speed.

I've had trouble with the bump spring and another time it wouldn't idle down all the way which was rust on the cross shaft and the bearings weren't very nice either.

Thanks! The adjustment screw has turned to rust. Has anyone used a ball point pen spring as a replacement, or should I just go ahead and buy the right part?

Ball point pen spring would be too light. You should be able to find a spring in a hardware store that will do the trick. One that fits into the hole in screw and is easily compressed with a finger. Us old mechanics usually have a drawer full of various springs as one rule is, never throw away a spring.

Takethe screw with you that holds the bumper spring then go to Lowes or a similar place that has small compression springs it needs to be stuff you can make it the correct length by grinding a coil. Make sure you have all of the old one out many are broken off and pieces are still in there. You can get the pieces out with some time so the new one can seat good. If you need a good one i have some.

Thanks! I'll head to Lowe's this morning to see what I can come up with. Thanks again for your help.
