6 volt battery

Working on a ?49 Farmall cub. Could anyone tell me
the size or group # of the 6 volt battery that will fit in
the OEM battery box? Thanks

I have one of these in my tractor and they are GREAT!! Holds a charge well and gives you a good life for a 6 volt battery. Generally my tractor sits from Nov. until around the 1st of March. So far every year the tractor starts right up after sitting all that time without being charged.

The 19L has the distinct advantage of fitting in the battery box.

Group 1 batteries have "grown" over the years, and they are usually too tall to get the lid on the battery box without a bunch of messing around, and risking a short circuit.

Orchelns used to sell an 8 volt battery. when I had some john deere crawlers I used them in it. worked very well. Anymore I convert all my 6 volt to 12 volt. The delco alternators are around 50 bucks. put one of those battery maintainers on when your not using it and your battery will last for years. Batteries aren't cheap anymore. just saying

Agreed,
The battery box on my loboy measures 8 1/2" deep inside, the napa group 1 measures 8 3/4" tall vs 7 1/2" for the 19L allowing for clearance for the box top.
Also, the 19L is 1/4 inch shorter in length allowing it to easily drop into the box, vs trying to stuff the group 1 inside and bow out the sides.
Found this all out by trial and error a few years back when I brought my "money pit"loboy project home...Tom

I've heard about the growing group 1 battery size in the past but not run into it first hand. The battery specs that I have checked from back in the day say a group 1 battery is 9-1/8 tall. So one at 8-3/4 should fit.

I have measured a couple Cub boxes at 8-3/4 tall (from inside where the battery rests). I also have a repro here (never put on a tractor yet) that measures 8-1/2. I don't know if original boxes varied and the repro is a copy of a slightly shorter one or what.

In any case, the rubber blocks attached to the cover should press down on the battery (short ones on the terminals) to hold it down. My repro lid doesn't have the rubber blocks, so Yeah an 8-3/4 battery is going to have a problem. Not clear it is the fault of the battery. I guess that is why the repro box came with a flat sheet of rubber.

I guess the take away is that you should measure your box and check the specs of the battery before you buy it. Then you better make sure the hot battery post is insulated from the lid. You can (could?) get plastic covers at the auto parts stores to stick over the cable clamp for not much.

I'm cheap. I hate to pay more for an undersize battery.

Hi Jim,
If I remember correctly, When I originally went to my local Napa to get the battery for the Cub (It didn't have one when I got it), I came home with group one for
that reason, it was quite a bit cheaper at the time, it fit in the box but it looked like a boiled over pot of mashed potatoes with the lid resting on top. I
ended up using the group 1 in my JD B as it needed one, and tried the 27L in the Cub, it fit well. All the 6 volt batteries were about $20.00 cheaper back then,
it is amazing how the prices have gone up in recent years. Also seems like we need to have an engineering degree to make a lot of the "new" replacement parts fit
our old Tractors doesn't it, Regards...Tom
