Hey everyone,I was wondering what the lever is for to the left of the battery that goes and connects to the radiator?

A shutters were controlled by a crank. Is it a Super A? It used a lever mounted on the left side of the control/instrument panel.

It's just an A,so how would I know what position it should be in,and how do I see if the shutters are in,I guess the question would be,are they inside the radiator?it's hard to turn because of where the exhaust lift cylinder is.

Okay I?m more of an H & M guy and have never seen one of those with shutters still in place. Looking at the Super A parts book online it looks like they sit in front of the radiator. They are vertical steel/tin slats that rotate to block air flow, think mini-blind.

I have a 51 Super A and as far as I know it has never had shutters in it. Did all the Super As have shutters and if not which ones did and which ones did not? What year did they stop putting them in?

It was never regular equipment. It was part of the distillate attachment and available as a separate attachment. Not real common.

Ok ill check when i get home, Why did they use these, in case it was to cold? to help keep the engine warm?

Engines have to be completely warmed up to run well on the low grade fuels like distillate and kerosene. The shutters help with the warm up.
