Yellow Gear Oil

I rebuilt the transmission on my 1955 Farmall 100. The gear oil is now yellow in color. What caused that and what should I do?

Using the wrong type gear oil will damage the soft metal parts like brass and bronze. GL-4 grade is what was used back then I believe, and GL-5 is what is available now. Google info about this to make sure I?m right.

It's for a 1955 Farmall 100. I just rebuilt the transmission and am using GL-5. I've only got about 30 minutes run time. I noticed the yellow coloring as it was draining out of the fill hole when I topped it off.

Johnny, I followed your videos and questions as you were rebuilding that rearend so I?m pretty sure you had it completely cleaned out before reassembly. That would rule out contamination by remaining oil or whatever else. What kind of use and storage has the tractor had since it has been back together?

It's been in my garage protected from the elements. I put oil in the transmission about a month ago, but didn't get the tractor running until this past Wednesday. It's had about 15 minutes run time when I topped it off..since then I've put about another 30 minutes on it. Considering that I overbought on gear oil, I'm tempted to change it. Just can't figure it out how it got that way...but since it came out from the overflow, maybe it just some stuff floating on top.

If it is water it needs to set so the water can separate to the bottom then be drained out with the loosening of the plug then tighten back up when the oil starts to come.
