Farmall 706D when in Reverse

When I put the tractor in reverse and let the clutch out, I am hearing a load click sound. What is this and should I be worried?

You have gear teeth gone on park reverse gear Cause by not haveing in Neutral when putting in park or bad leakage it mite get Worst it Comin in 706 806 1206

Could be the range shift linkage is worn and not letting it completely fall into reverse. The biggest culprit is the range cover. The first sign of wear is it will start not shifting into reverse,or will pop out of reverse. They can sometimes be 'repaired',but the best option is to buy a rebuilt cover.Sometimes you can adjust it some. But if you adjust to more fully engage reverse, you tend to reduce the 'mesh' of high range, cause it to not fully engauge or pop out of gear..Remove the cover over the dash, and the floor board to inspect the 'works'.

If you have a clicking sound while in reverse, You have a tooth (or more) missing in the park gear. I say it's usually caused by dropping the park lever into the PARK while the tractor is
STILL MOVING. Pull the range shifting cover and take a look. You might have to jack up one of the back wheels and turn it to rotate the gears to see the missing tooth or (Teeth). I have done this repair job more than once when I was still turning wrenches.

Yep reverse Driven gear has some toohers missing , as said someone at one time or other dropped the park loc OR the park loc did not hold on a hill due to being out of adjustment or trying to hold to big of a load . The gear that is bad is the last gear to come out and the first back in . To do the repair the tractor has to be split between the range and speed transmission and EVERYTHING has to come off and OUT And when ya go back together myself i would update the park loc with the spring loaded one , they are much safer then the old over center ones . It's a pretty big job and one of them jobs ya don't want to get parts mixed up .

It also is hard to get it up into high range. Ok so what do I do? How big / hard of a job is this to fix? So the tractor has to be split to fix it?

When Vet said you need to remove everything, this is what the rear housing looks like when it's all apart.

Thanks for the picture. This does not look good and looks to be a huge job. Not sure I want to do it. If I don?t fix it now, what is going to happen?

Sorry, to hear you got ?sucked under? by one of IH?s greater down falls ?the plague of the poor shifter design.? Let me help by translating the last of timmy?s post into proper English. ...?bad linkage, it might get worse. It (is) common in (these IH models; the) 706, 806 and 1206.?

Yup and if there are no teeth missing and you want to be able to have independent adjustment of the reverse shifting just convert it to a 56/66 series shifting mechanism. We did that to our 806 and never been so happy with it since. It is not real expensive and works much better than the old mechanism did. I put new bushings in the lid changed lids and all that jazz and still never shifted good with that old 06 series set up.
