I?ve got an uncle who has a non running Farmall AV with complete cultivator linkage and I own a nice running Farmall A with no linkage. Can I use the hand lift linkage from the AV on my A or are they different?
 
Picked up the tractor from my uncle today and it ended up not being an AV but an A. He said it is a 1939 model. We can?t find a serial number plate under the seat, but the seat is different having a large cone shaped spring under it unlike the later A?s and SA?s. The cultivator linkage was off the tractor laying around the shed, but I think I found all of it. The mid mount arms are round, but the tool bars where the shanks mount are rectangular. I think it is an A-134 cultivator from the reading I?ve been doing. Also has a mid mount disc plow that goes with it which looks to be controlled by a lever on the right hand side. Tractor also has the auxiliary fuel tank for starting on gasoline then switching to kerosene.
 
The seat has been changed. A few of the earliest As had the serial plate on the shield below the front edge of the platform. If the serial plate is missing, the engine number on most A/B tractors is the same as the serial number. The ones that don't match were all built in '47. The engine number is stamped into a machined boss at the top of the block below spark plug #1.
 
Jim, you may be right about the seat, but it looks original to the tractor...same patina as the rest of the machine and mounted professionally. Are the A?s not supposed to have a seat like this one? I see other pictures of them on the web with the same kind? I?ll look at the front shield today, but I think I would have noticed a tag there, but I wasn?t looking.
 
That seat was made by Monroe as a replacement seat. It was never offered from the factory. They were available from many IH dealers. It could have been dealer installed when it was a new tractor, but was nonetheless installed after the tractor left the factory.
 
Great info Jim. Thanks! Can?t believe the cost of original seats on eBay! WOW! Guess I?m gonna keep the one I have now. Found the engine number on the block FAA83289, so I guess it?s a 1942 according to tractor data.com. I?m going to try an get a picture on here in the next few days.
 
That would be 1942. The serial and engine numbers would have matched. It is late enough that the serial plate would have been on the seat bracket.

That's right about the plow. I didn't get the plow, but will later. I will have to take a tractor by to load it on a trailer. My understanding from my uncle was that it was a belly mounted plow, but he may be confused, cause we own a SA with a two disc belly plow. Were all the A-147 plows rear mounted? I looked on the web and see a lot of A-147's listed for cubs; are they the same?
 
There is a Cub-151, which is a Cub plow similar to the A-147.

The A-147 is reasonably described as a rear semi-mounted machine. The front is attached to and lifted by the tractor. There is a tail wheel for the back end that is controlled by a hand lever on the plow.

There is an arm clamped to the steering arm on the right end of your tractor front axle. This controls linkage that reaches to the tail wheel to steer it.
