I have decided to invest in a paint spray gun. Do any of you have a preference?
What to look for? Just spray or HVLP ?
Thanks

I bought an HVLP gun from harbor freight a few years ago an trashed after first attempt to use. Was a total hoser A friend had the same experience.

What paint will you be using? If you are using some automotive paints they are as thin as water and a better spray gun would be useful. If you are just using an alkyd enamel then a cheap sprayer will do just fine. I use a Harbor Freight #97855 siphon sprayer to paint with. I used one to paint this tractor including the stenciling using Dupont Nason paint. It sprays very much like an alkyd enamel.

I've bought about five HF gravity feed HvLp spray guns. The one with the plastic cup didn't like the laquer thinner we cleaned it with. After 2-3 cups of paint the lid wouldn't go on. Then I bought 3-4 guns with metal cups. First one worked great. Till I took it totally apart to clean and lost a little part under my work bench. Next gun would not spray ANYTHING. Took it back and exchanged it. Next one worked O-K. I thing there was one other that didn't work very good also.

But for $15 or less if you find a coupon they work O-K if you get a good one. It's not hard to spend more for solvent/thinner to clean them up than what a new spray gun costs.

depends on your budget, how many times you will use it, what type of paint (ie to determine tip size) and if you want a cheap throw away that will squirt a fair to decent finish, or a high line gun that will give an excellent finish. check ebay or craigslist for either a binks number 7 or binks number 9 siphon gun, or devilbiss jga 450 or 504 gun. these were and still are excellent guns in the non hvlp line, repair parts are readily available as are additional tips. auto body shops in most areas can no longer use these, primarily due to epa mandates. they do generate more overspray and use more paint than the hvlp guns. if you want to go to a good solid production hvlp gun, check out anest iwata. we have several at the shop and they do well for the price. the top line gun we use at the shop is the sata. probably the best performing gun on the market. they do carry a hefty price tag. 5 to 700 a copy. but, when you shoot a couple grand worth of custom paint, its gotta be right.

Harbor Freight has a couple of different HVLP spray guns. I have the one that includes the air pressure regulator. It costs $25 to $30. They also sell disposable paint cups for it. I used the disposable cups but keep on cleaning them until they get really beat up. I have taken this gun apart and cleaned it dozens of times. Here is the first project I painted with it.

I have about five assorted HF HVLP guns I use for all around painting and, a couple of higher priced ones to shoot clear coat. I use HVLP for everything but primer. Still use a siphon gun for primer because it's easier to set down for a while and then stir up the contents to use again.

HVLP wastes far less product. A 20 ounce cup on an HVLP gun will cover approximately the same area as a 32 ounce cup on a siphon gun.
