Farmall H hydraulics

I have a 1944 farmall H with the belly hydraulics. I am getting air in the hydraulic oil. The oil squirts out the breather hole as foam on the external reservoir a few seconds after the bucket has been lowered. What is causing this problem? Please help. Thanks

Take the added reservoir off. Put it in front of the rear tire and
drive forward four feet. End of problem . Fill pump to proper
level.

I have tried this except with out running over the extra reservoir. It seems no matter what level the oil is it still foams even when there is not enough oil in the system to raise the bucket only a couple of feet of the ground. Could I have a leak at the pump? I have had the tractor for 4 years and just started to have this problem last winter. When I got the tractor I did clean out the hydraulics and other cavities and replaced with clean fluids.
thanks for the info.

Just try taking the extra reservoir off to see how that works. Maybe even changing the oil. If it still bothers it would have to be a problem above oil level inside the pump on suction side of gears. I don't know if you know this but it was always wise to store the cylinder upside down if they were removed from tractor as once those large one way cylinders get air in them from being disconnected and sitting right side up, it can be difficult to get all the air out.

I wasn't really trying to be a wise guy about running over the extra reservoir, it is that I just got so sick of them coming into the shop hooked up that way for extra capacity. It takes extra plumbing to make a good extra reservoir connection that actually works well. Air gets trapped above the normal level in top of pump body, compresses upon lowering of cylinder and then spurts oil out of added reservoir. Same thing on SM, 400s etc.

Found the problem the rear seal on the pump shaft is leaking. Can I replace this seal without pulling the pump?
Thanks

Yes, but it is MUCH easier with the pump out on the floor.

We had an extra reservoir on top of the gas tank for 2 way hydraulics. Just plumb the extra tank to the fill tube for the pump. Then mount a valve for the 2 way hydraulics. With the pump lever tied back, it will work for 2 way through the new valve then. No foaming or other oil problems like that. I have never seen the old cap for the original fill since this was done before I was involved in things.
