After pulling the tractor over the pasture and it not "fire, crank or run". Pulled it back to the shop turned the key and it "fired , cranked and ran" for 2hrs at various rpm, shut it down, let it sit over night and it will not "fire, crank or run. More advice please.

Is the throttle set at least 1/3 open for starting? If not the excess fuel feature won't help as it does not work at idle position on the American Bosch M100 injection pump. Needs to be at least 1/3 open EVERY time to start correctly, hot or cold..

I assume the words won't crank means the starter is not rotating the engine. But words are not consistent in meaning. Jim

if the engine doesnt turn over take off the left hood panel and check the clutch safety switch on the fire wall.on the later 86 series tractors there is also a park safety switch. if the engine turns over but doesnt fire check the rubber hose from the fuel filters to the pump for cracks or pin holes. i had a combine the was hard starting i found it had a pin hole in the hose and the fuel drained back to the tank over night. that shouldnt happen in the tractors unless the fuel level drops below pump level

Well dragging a 1086 around unless it does not have a T/A , i don't care if ya drag it from Cal. to N Y and back it will not start

Check the heavy "hot" battery cable where it connects
to the starter solenoid.
Our 1066 was having nearly the same problem with
"intermittent" starting & it had the lug that went to the
solenoid eaten out inside.

It checked out for having voltage to the lug & terminal, but
wouldn't pass heavy cranking current.

Put 2 star lock washers with inside & outside teeth on each
side of the batt. cable lug on the solenoid terminal. Tighten
the nut down.

Might check ALL connections for the heavy starter draw.

Some fellows mess me up substituting the word crank when they mean start. If it won't start after a filter change there may still be air in the system too.

What really is wrong with it will it turn over and crank like crazy or will it just Verleye turn over or it won?t do nothing what is that actually wrong with it we get so many stories

Might add that the nephews had the same problem with their
1086. They didn't want to pull the floor plate to check all the
connections, so they wanted to pull start it.

Reminded me of Vets saying earlier in this post about pulling
to start.
I told them they were wasting their time, but they said if they
got it going fast enough, it would start.

Well, down the road they went with the 656 & 1086 for a half mile.
They turned around in a driveway & headed back.

I helped them take off the floor plate & had a look at the terminals
& connections.
The strap from the solenoid to the starter terminal was loose & had
an overheated look to it. I removed the strap & used a strip of emery
cloth to clean it up.

Put it back & tightened all connections---including the batt. terminals.
Turned the key, & started right up.

This was 4 or 5 years ago. Still starts as it should now.

Moral of the story----don't hesitate to dig a little deeper to find the
problem.

If you guys can figure out what he really means, you are a better man than I am. In his original post he said it ran fine before he changed filters. Does not say why he changed filters. If, and I do mean if he only changed them for regular service, he then tried to start the engine and it was not bled out, he CRANKED long enough to cause electical problems and that is where we are at now. I think he is frustrated now with us calling for proper terminology when asking for advice.
Then again maybe it conked out and that is why he changed filters.

As I explained, the solutions for each of those problems, crank, fire, and run, is completely different. You know what the proper terms are now, so please use them. Using them all together is not helpful or productive.

It is also not helpful or productive to take an "attitude" with the people who are trying to help you. For free, I might add. If you called the CaseIH dealership they would ask you the same questions and tell you the same things about crank vs. run.

But yes, if you got it running again, you've got an air leak somewhere and the fuel ran back.

Well, if it don't crank it sure the heck isn't going to fire or run so how it could run for two hours without cranking, I don't know.
