H Exhaust Manifold Questions

Hello, all. I'll bet it's been over two or three years since I've posted on the board. Good to be back.

This fall I "just had to have" another H treasure that I found at a used equipment dealer. According to the serial number, there were only five more H models made. All the tin is good--even if it was painted not quite the right red (or has faded). Ran pretty good, except for the blue smoke, and needed a few things fixed and greased and re-gasketed and tuned up.

I discovered a couple days ago that the manifold has a couple of holes in it. They're about 1/8-to-3/16" in diameter, several inches above where the manifold joins the carburetor. One is on the side surface, and the other toward the rear. Blows exhaust pretty good through those holes.

I suppose I could find someone to weld or braze or whatever a couple of patches over the holes, but I don't think I want to do that. I'd just as soon replace it with something new.

The nuts/studs look pretty good and clean--not rusted as the manifold itself. I would hope they'll come off without too much trouble.

Questions are: what's a good source for a new manifold? I know YT sells them. But who else might I consider and/or avoid? And do you have any handy tips for changing one? What should I do and not do, etc.

I await your collective wisdom. Thanks.

David

Those holes are supposed to be there. They provide a way for water to drain out if the tractor is left out in the rain. Most of them are plugged solid with rust and carbon, but yours are not. Be happy.

Yep, they are there for a purpose, BUT, I hate the dam things and drive a soft plug in them. Put a can over the exhaust. Just another opinion as we all have plenty.

I hope rustyfarmall was joking lol the holes warm a cold carburetor so I doesn't ice up If you haven't experienced it your in warm places

The holes in lot of the manifolds point right back toward the engine and no where near the carburetors and that whole idea of warming the carburetor is a joke on any of those engines.

David, As Howard said find a good original, for that I always call JP tractor in MO. first most times he has good parts and fair prices. oldiron29
