404 utility 3 point

Hey guys, new to the group and would appreciate some advice.
Born and raised on a small grains/cattle farm in ND. Most of our equipment was "red", but none of our tractors ever had 3 point hitches. (So I'm no expert)I recently came across a beautiful 404 utility and knew I had to have it. It is in excellent shape and has spent most of its life working at a marina pulling fishing boats to and from the dock. It is in very good shape, but does not have a 3 point.
Is it possible to put a 3 point setup on a "bareback" 404? If so, will other older style IH 3 points fit?
Any info would be appreciated.

wbarreth, welcome to YT! The best I can do for you is based off my experience with a row crop 656. I am not familiar with the utilities at all. Most IH row crop tractors of that era, in fact probably all of them since they first offered a 3 point use the back upper section of the trans cover to integrally house the 3 point lift cross shaft. If your tractor does not have blocked off spots on each side where the 3 point lift arms would connect you are probably out of luck for installing the stock 3 point for your tractor. Even if it does have block offs whose to say that the internal areas are all machined to accept the cross shaft and lift cylinder. If I was approaching this job and I saw nothing that resembles the items I mentioned I would venture to say a starting point dollar figure to do it would be $1500. That would mean replacing the top trans cover. I have not investigated this but there may be a universal 3 point system similar to what guys put on an M that could get you a 3 point capable tractor for less money.

This is an excellent answer !

The 404, both Farmall and Utility versions, is derived from the 240, which is derived from the 230, 200, Super C, and originally the Farmall C.

The 404 was the first, last, and only tractor in the series to be equipped with a 3pt hitch. So only a 3pt hitch from a 404 Utility will fit the 404 Utility. If it was a 504, it would share some parts commonality with the 656, but as a 404 there are no parts in common.
