Looking at a FARMALL MD

Good morning everyone. I have an easy question I hope. I'm going to look at a farmall MD this weekend. The guy is pretty set on a price of $2,000. And that's delivered. I have not seen the machine yet but I'm told it runs and drives fine. Is this a fair price? What should I look for as problems with this machine. I have never owned one and I thought it would be neat to have in the collection

Others may offer more/better information but it should start easily on gas and switch over
easily to diesel when the engine is warmed up. The engines are really susceptible to cracks
in the head, and the more complicated throttle apparatus has to be properly adjusted to switch
from gas to diesel.

From the flywheel back, it's an M.

Contamination between water and oil, any sign of pressurization in cooling system. They are very prone to cracking the cylinder heads. Has the engine ever been overhauled, does it smoke and burn oil, a engine overhaul will cost over 5k just in parts. They are very expensive engines to work on. I have 5 md's and super mds great tractors but xan be costly to maintain. Jim from Maryland.

Check for fuel contamination in the injection pump case. There is a peacock there on the side of the pump to check the oil level in the pump. It should not have fuel at that petcock, it's only for the oil level check. If there is fuel in there, it will need the transfer pump resealed. Not a big job, but if you aren't mechanically inclined, it could seem like it.
