B Transmission noise

A few days ago a guy posted about a transmission noise his B was making and asked what could be causing it. That thread morphed into a discussion about splitting the tractor and no one ever did mention what might be causing the noise.

Now I'm going to ask about a B we have at Farmamerica. That tractor has also developed an intermittent grinding/growling noise in the transmission. As I said, it's intermittent, but when it does occur the rear wheels twitch slightly, as if they want to start turning. When you step on the clutch the noise goes away. Any ideas as to what's going on in there?

Read again remove the top of the tranny for a visual look. Check the oil slinger gear. You split at the front of the traqnny then you can disconnect the joint at the front of the tranny then you can remove the input bearing and seal. Whatever you want to do after that depends on what you think is the problem.

Get an IT Manual or IH manuals from www.nnalert. These manuals will give you a picture of the insides of the drive train.
If the there is noise when the transmission is in neutral and the PTO disengaged, then only the top transmission shaft and oil slinger gear(not all Bs will have an oil slinger gear)are in motion. If the oil slinger is good or you don't have one, then I would suspect a bearing on the top transmission shaft. Not too difficult to repair. If it would be a bad oil slinger or anything else, the repair is more complicated because the bottom transmission shaft would have to be removed. After removing the top transmission cover, you should be able to see if you have any damaged gears.
If the noise is only when the tractor is in motion, you will also have to consider a problem in the final drives.

That's because there are many things that could be causing the noise, and the only way to figure out what is causing the noise is to do some "exploratory surgery" which usually turns into a repair. Once you get in there it is usually pretty obvious what is wrong, as there are pieces of metal in places they should not be.

When my B did that it was the oil slinger gear loosing it's teeth as gene mentioned. Had to put in another gear and clean out all the broken pot metal teeth. If I recall it can be seen through the oil fill plug..

It doesnt sound like a trans problem to me. I think it the final drive bearings shot preventing the bull gear and pinion from meshing correctly. Jack
the rear end of the tractor up and spin the wheels and I think it will be obvious whats wrong
