Several C questions

Posted recently about starting issues with newly acquired Farmall C. Thanks to YT suggestions it now runs. However, as my Dad said, it's always something:

-Runs very rough. Smooths out a little with choke on. Likely carburator problem? Take it off and start cleaning or matter of fiddling with adjustment screws?

-Taking out plug on platform and testing with a rod indicates almost no oil in transmission case. Is transmission and rear end a common compartment? What oil and how much. Any such thing as flushing before refilling?

-It's a wide front end. Steers real hard. Like harder than an AC WD with mtd cultivator or loader. I had expected it to steer pretty easy. My recollection of running an H 50 years ago is that it steered pretty nice and thought the C would be similar. Greased all evident zerks. Presume there must be some kind of toothed steering sector in the casting below the radiator and worried it is somehow a factor. Thoughts/theories? Thanks.

For the carb, personally I would remove it and give it a good cleaning, then set adjustments back to "factory". I just did the one on my JD B and the guy before me said it was rebuilt, but was filled with rust.

The rear end is all one unit, or at least my m is and im assuming they are the same design. On my m there is I believe 2 or maybe 3 plugs so check to make sure all of the plugs are in if the C's have more than one.

I would have no idea on the steering. I know there is a couple grease zerks under the hood. Did you grease those?

Jack the front off the ground so it steers easy and grease the fittings on the spindles there is also 90wt used in the steering box but you need to remove the hood to get access. Wide fronts do not steer easy. I would remove the plug and drain the tranny. A good flushing with some diesel would not hurt. Then fill with 90wt. Having an owners manual will help alos.

No grease zerks under the hood. H/M yes. C,no.As was said, jack up the front,grease/oil/clean out...Turn stop to stop a few times to clean out the crap.

W3hen i said the hood you need to remove it to remove the grille where the 90wt can be checked and filled for the steering gear and bearings.

there is a small square plug on the side of tranny, that is the check oil level. i would crack open the drain plug and let some of the goop out, maybe drain completely

The wide front on the C through 240 tractors was rough to steer. If you used it year in and year out like we did it will develop a good bit of slop in the worm gear due to wear. It was especially rough when used with C 272 planters but we had no choice. Yes the wide front on the C will be hard to steer and that would be normal. I do not know of anything you can do to fix the issue except to remove the wide front and place a tricycle front in its place.

I?m attaching a link to the CaseIH online parts for a Super C. If you have much computer savvy this should be of some help. I have never been able to find the pages for a regular C, but the two share many of the same parts, but the biggest difference being the Super has hydraulics. Clean the carb make sure you poke out every little hole you see with a small bit or fine wire. Spray with carb cleaner and blast with air. Grease up the front end as others have said. Good luck and enjoy!
