364 lack of steering

My 364 was not starting to easily
this morning. After I blew out the
three dozen acorns in the tailpipe
I thought I was okay. But to my
surprise I cannot steer the
tractor left or right. It does
have hydraulic assist on the
steering. I tried to work it left
and right a few dozen times. It
would finally end up going to the
left but not to the right. Then
later after running it a few more
minutes it started to hesitate
going left again. Any suggestions.
what little it does move is power-
assisted but it feels like it's
hitting a block at the far left or
far right and I will not go any
further.

Hi John, the 364 could have two different hydraulic setups for the power steering.
1) Two separate hydraulic pumps, stacked one behind the other on front right of engine. Can be identified by 1 large hydraulic return pipe and 2 small high pressure hydraulic pipes, one for PS and one for 3 pt.
2) One hydraulic pump on front right of engine with a splitter/priority valve block where the PS hoses connect. The purpose of this block is to give about 3 GPM flow to the PS and the remainder to the 3pt. This valve can stick and give all the flow to PS or all the flow to 3pt.
Some checks and questions:
1) Does 3pt work?
2) Was it cold enough to freeze water in your area?
3) Can you see hydraulic fluid in the reservoir under the seat by removing the large filler plug behind the seat and looking in?
4) Check crankcase oil level for being over full?
5) Have you ever cleaned the hydraulic suction filter where the large hydraulic suction line comes out of the reservoir under the seat?
6) Do you hear any buzzing noise when you turn the steering wheel?

Okay here's a rundown of the questions you asked. Yes the 3 point hitch does work but when you regulate it with the control knob for fast or slow it does not make any difference. The steering wheel does not buzz when you hold it against the stop left or right. Yes it has been cold enough to freeze water here. And yes I do know the crankcase is a little over full on oil but why would that make a difference?

Hi John,
If cold enough to freeze water you could have moisture frozen somewhere in the hydraulic system but should disappear by 30 minutes of running tractor.

If crankcase is over full the front seal of the hydraulic pump could be leaking allowing hydraulic oil into the crankcase and eventually the hydraulic reservoir will be near empty.

The 3pt fast/slow, you will only notice it being slower when you have a heavy implement on the 3pt.

No buzzing indicates that the hydraulic relief valve is not being tripped.

I had the tractor running for a good 40 minutes today to warm up the fluid. I can finally get it to make it turn all the way to the left but it would not go to the right. Then eventually it would stop going to the left as well. The hydraulic reservoir on that is the same one that runs the 3 point hitch. And there is plenty of fluid in it.

John,
See link below to caseih.com PS assist cylinder parts list.

Either there is a hydraulic flow problem to the PS assist cylinder or there is something wrong in the steering assist cylinder or the control valve in the cylinder that the steering drag link is connected too.

I would jack up the front so the wheels are not touching the ground. Remove the filler cap no with engine running turn left and right to see if it will turn all the way as you mite have some air locked in the system and by turning left and right many times just mite bleed any trapped air in the system and then work like its supposed to
