856 hydraulics

I've got a '69 model IH 856 with the 361D engine located on pasture land we have out of state. When I put the tractor in the shed on our last visit all worked fine. On this most recent trip there the tractor fired right up, after checking all fluids, but when I went to drive it out I found that I had no steering & no brakes.

The 3 pt worked fine & I was able to operate the implement on the remote valves too. My time there was short so all I had time to do was to look for oil on the ground but there was none. The only thing that stood out was there was a slight amount of oily film on the area where the brake pedals attach.

I believe that there are two hydraulic pumps on this tractor, so other than filters, what should I look for? Any help is appreciated.

May have just lost its prime, and allowing the tractor to set and run for awhile might cure it. Over-filling the trans by 5 gallons or more might also fix it.

Thanks Rusty, I'll give it a try when I get there next month. The tractor usually sits for about 60 days between our trips up there.

Be low on mcv were there a sending unit below it is plug take a 5/8 wrench to remove take plug out Crank it or start it until all shoot out Install plug started up you should have steering and a mess

Lost prime. Probably will ultimately need a new pump. NOw how does an 856 have a D-361 in it. They came with a D-407 So did somebody change it out in the past?

Caterpillar guy,
When you say the pump may need changing do you mean the MCV assembly? If so is this something that I can do under the shed with basic tools?

As for the D361 engine, I bought this tractor from a 91 yr. old WWII vet who's small business rebuilt & sold the larger, used IH tractors. (roughly 706 & above). He had an extra D361, maybe from a salvaged tractor, on his lot & used it to replace the engine in this 856 since it had apparently been run with little oil resulting in a cracked block, or so I was told.

I talked with several on this site about the D361 change & most spoke very highly of it & a couple of guys preferred the D361 over the D407, so I went with it.

I've had the tractor for 2 yrs. now & it's worked great up until this problem.

My big issue will be whether to attempt changing it out at the farm or having it done by a professional.

Thanks,

Gary
