Farmall C Transmission

I am beginning the process of rebuilding my Farmall C, starting with the transmission.

I have what I believe are the proper collection of parts to reassemble the countershaft. There is a nut at the treaded end (4221D) at the shaft. The nut I believe to be correct does not not thread on easy by hand. It is a castle nut, but I don't know if the nut I found in my pile of parts is the wrong nut with a different thread, or if it's correct, and an interference locking nut, or what.

Can anyone tell me about this nut? Should this go on difficultly? I plan on getting a thread gauge from the fastener store, which should answer some questions, but I bet you guys could answer it quicker.

Thanks
Kurt

Often a castle nut will be locked with a cotter key. Then there are locknuts with thin cuts across the nut. I suspect it's a self locking nut.

Spray pam cooking oil into the nut and put a piece of clay into it to impress the threads in the clay. check the impression to the shaft (male) threads to make sure it is compatible. Screwing up the threads on the shaft is a High buck error. Jim

I've determined that the thread size/pitch is the same. It goes on, just not easy. I vaguely remember it coming off hard too, but it was a year ago. I guess I don't understand the difference between a slotted and castle nut, but suffice to say this nut clearly has interference and slots for a cotter pin. The shaft has corresponding holes.

When I was originally tearing everything down, I ended up disassembling the differential in order to get everything out. It was a mess and a pain. With everything in that case (bull gears, differential, countershaft and bevel, input shaft) does anyone know the proper order to reassemble? Obviously it came apart messy, and a way that is not possible to replicate in reverse.

I'm learning a lot, for the next tractor I restore. That one will be much cleaner!

Thanks again.

Sounds like you need a repair manual for this tractor. I would say a genuine IH manual would be best in this case it would have more of the details you are looking for to do the assembly. There are also IT manuals that generally cover assembly specs and other needed details for use by a more seasoned mechanic. Binder books online is a good source. In case you may not be aware of the availability, I?m attaching a link to the online IH parts book for your tractor. The link is to the pages for the Super C which the transmission should be almost if not completely identical. Because I can not find the straight C pages on their site. I have an M and have never been able to find the pages for a straight M either, only the Super M. You can find the parts pages for a straight H, hmmm go figure.

You can find the M from Messicks site.
Go to partsstore, but rather than "search" for your model, select "browse". The way they have things categorized has me somewhat baffled, but in any case:
Select product type: TRACTORS
Select product line: UTILITY
Select series: LEGACY

It will return a 2 page list that includes the letter series Farmalls (but not the standard tractors).

OK, I've played with the Case parts web site. Here is how you do the older tractors, M, C, 400 etc.
Instead of searching by model you do "Browse"
Then "Tractors" "Utility" "Legacy"
And there you have all the letter series and early number series.

I tried this before but never tried utility since it was an ag tractor???????

It is there, I have all my stuff bookmarked in the my shed so they show in the model list.
