buddy has a 454 diesel and is looking to add an engine block heater for the winter. looked on line at case i-h and they really dont show one. any decent aftermarket ones to recommend? he has an ether start unit on it, but its a cold natured beast.

Hi, as DieselTech says tank heater with bottom connected to block drain above starter and top connected to water jacket up on top right of engine by thermostat.
Possibly a heater in bottom Rad hose but I believe Rad hose has wire coil inside to prevent collapsing so difficult to fix rad hose heater.

Glennster,
I just bought a 454 diesel a couple months ago, and was glad to see that it had the tank heater already installed, connected as JimB described, and did not have the ether-tank as described in the manual. At this point I have only plugged it in to see if it works, and it seems to heat fairly quickly. The hoses are older and pretty stiff, so I need to get a size and spec for replacement hose in order to remove the bottom hose to drain the coolant.

I have used the lower radiator hose heaters on about 5 different Diesel tractors but not a 454. I've always had good luck with them. Kat's is one company I can think of that makes them, sold at TSC and Auto Zone. I always figured worst case if they didn't work out I would just have to buy a new hose but never had to.
