856 won't start at first?

Went to move the 856 and when I tried to start it, the starter hit once put did not turn over the engine then after that nothing happen, I had lights the oil pressure tellite and alternator-generator tellite was on but the tractor was dead I tried it several times but would not turn over. Went to the house and got my mm and jumping cables check the batteries and had 6.5 volts. Hook the cables up to jump it with the truck. Push the starter button once nothing then push it the second time and it starts right up. Any ideals what I should look for? safety starting switch, solenoid, loose wire to any of those or maybe batteries the connection at the batteries were tight? Shouldn't I have 12 volts at the solenoid?

Start with your battery cables. Check the connections at the battery and the starter and ground. Then check the solenoid and starter switch wire connections.

On a 12 volt system you should have 12.5 plus volts at the battery and at the ignition side battery connections. Good chance you had a poor connection and you messing with things made that connection get warm and then start working again.

If the starter clicks but doesn't turn the engine over, just continue holding the button down, or the key in "start" position for 10-20 seconds. Then go around and feel the different battery and starter connections. The bad one will be hot. Sometimes.

Factory setup on an 856 is two 6 Volt batteries in series. If you grab the wrong connections, you will measure 6.5 Volts.

To get it right you need to grab the main battery connection at the solenoid, and the chassis ground. You should see 12.5-13 Volts at that connection.

VERY common for a battery connection to get corroded with a high resistance. Running those gauges and lights doesn't take much power, but cranking the engine takes hundreds of Amps. The corroded connection(s) will not flow enough power to crank the tractor over. Clean and re-seat ALL of the large battery cable connections as a first no-cost step to troubleshooting.

Check your safety switch that is hooked up to the clutch pedal, Pull the wire off,and see how rusty, it is, mine was bad too.
