Farmall 460/D301 questions

I have a 460D that has a tired D236. I was
gonna rebuild it, but I have a D301 out of
a 715. I know about the rear plate and
front cover having to be changed wheb
converting from combine to tractor, which
isn't a big deal. But correct me if I'm
wrong in stating that the block on a 301 is
"basically" the same as the D236, meaning
that the D301 will directly bolt in place
of the D236? Second question is, if it does
fit, would it be ok to run it on that
tractor governed like a combine? I think
that combine engine is governed at 2650 or
something crazy high like that. I don't
intend on working it to death, or at all,
but I like its size, and would use it as a
wood hauling tractor, maybe a fertilizer
spreader, spraying, drilling tractor.
Thanks

Ross

I put a D301 in the 460D utility I had several years ago, it will bolt right in. I slowed the engine high speed to 2400. One thing you will need to do also is trash can the oil bath air cleaner, I switched mine to a dry type. The larger engine, and running faster at times mine sucked ALL the oil out in ten hours use on the snow blower that winter. Sure mad a fun toy out of that tractor, brother owns it now..

Thanks Dieseltech! Maybe you wouldn't know the before part, but was it much harder on fuel with the 301 than it was with the 236?

I would set rpm's same as 460 original speed. That hydraulic system, for one thing, is taxed the way it is getting all that oil through the filter and valves without excessive back pressure and cavitation. Pump is speed advance whereas 460 was load advance so engine will not be as smooth under load and probably take a little more fuel even under a light load. Will start a whole lot better if you get a good starter match up.

(quoted from post at 20:41:50 11/06/17) I am sure it will use more fuel, that where that extra power comes from.

But if you don't use that extra power, fuel economy should be about the same.

Light load fuel use saw no real increase, if I recall at PTO speed it was set for 70HP, the extra power sure helped on the snow blower. Left the combine speed advance injection pump on, but slowed it down a bit. Runs really smooth throughout the speed range..

I have two tractors with 301 460 gas and 560 diesel.those engines are around 90hp.left the rpms alone just throttle back.
