pulling out PTO shaft

I just purchased a 1943 Farmall H. One of the first things I do with any 'new' old tractor is drain the transmission case and remove the water/gear oil that I usually find and put in fresh 90 or 85 weight oil.

On this tractor, I started draining the transmission case and the goop that came out was like nothing I've ever seen. It was almost solid! So, after draining, I filled the case with diesel and ran it up and down the street for 15 minutes and redrained the case. I noticed that when I drained the case initially, I only collected a little over 5 gallons of sludge (when the case holds 6 gallons).

I'm inclined to pull the PTO shaft out to see if there's anything more sludge at the bottom of the transmission case. Is pulling the PTO as simple as unbolting the assembly from the back of the transmission case? And is reassembling it just as simple?

It should pull out very readily.
Stabbing it back in is tricky.
It helps to put a length of pipe over the tail end to balance the shaft as you stab it back into the receiver.

If you mean draining the transmission, I removed the big plug under the PTO and the smaller one at the from of the case

Just be sure the little sleeve coupler doesnt fall off and drop down into the depths.....As was said, use a pipe as a handle for leverage,

I was out of town for the past few weeks - got back - had the PTO out in about 3 minutes, took about 10 minutes to clean out the remaining goop, then another 3 minutes or so to reinstall the PTO. Didn't need to use anything for leverage. Tractor is working perfectly

Thanks for the advice
