IH 674 PTO Slipping

My IH 674's PTO slips in heavy brush. The lift and power steering works fine (even while the PTO's slipping). The PTO engages fine and will cut light brush, but slips in heavy grass even at high rpms and low gear. The fluid is clean and full and the hydraulic filter has been changed. I assume the PTO clutch needs to be rebuilt. I don't know the full history of this tractor, but I know it was used with a weak failing hydraulic pump for some time and may have been ran with low fluid at times due to a leak issue. That pump was replaced.

I see a PTO Clutch rebuild kit on this site that comes with discs, plates and springs. I've got a shop manual for the tractor, but I'm a shade tree repairer at best. Is the rebuild something that I can handle? Any pitfalls to avoid?

Thanks

It ain?t hard the book tells you pretty good how to do it you got to drain all the oil take the side cover out take the roll pin out of the clutch drum on the shaft pull the shaft out of the back and everything is right there

Hi, before replacing the PTO clutch make sure the PTO engagement lever and mechanism is working properly. Sometimes the mechanism behind the seat gets trash in there that interferes with the ON/OFF of the PTO, sometimes spraying your favorite lube on the mechanism including the PTO valve under the rubber boot on top of the MCV valve. Also you can check the PTO clutch pressure.

You need a pressure gage to set the pressure first then look at replacing the clutch. You will need it after you replace the clutch anyway. It should be like about 230 -260PSI.
