A man is looking to sell an IH 826. What is your view and experience of this tractor. It does not have a torque. He did tell me he had to replace
the head gasket as whe he bought it, it has water in the oil. It also has a loader. He said the loader goes up, but will not come done. He said
it will come down overnight. What could this be? Thoughts and ideas are welcome.

Orings are leaking on the liners and remote valve coupler end bad or if it has a check valve it mite be bad

is it a gear transmission? or a Hydro? Hydros don't have 'torques'. The diesel used the 358 German diesel. Good motors, but a bit pricy to overhaul.I have owned an 826 hydro for 10 years. Love it. I have absolutely no issues with it. It's main use is haying, but I also puta lot of hours on doing other jobs..Cant help on the loader issue, but sounds lile a relief valve is sticking.Good tractors!

He is using proper terminology that many may not be familiar with. I believe he is referring to the quick coupler of one of the hose tips where it plugs the in the back of the tractor or wherever the connections happen to be on your loader setup. They sometimes have issues where they act like a check valve, fluid can flow one way but not back. Start by seeing if the male and female are matched, there are ?tip? type and ball type.

At lunch now so have more time to add to my reply. How long has the tractor been run since the head gasket was replaced? If the current owner has run it a bit has he determined that coolant getting in the oil pan is no longer a issue? The German built 358 diesel were good engines, but were known to have problems with the cylinder sleeve o-rings leaking coolant into the pan. If I was buying it I would want a 6-8 hour pressure test on the cooling system at the rated cap pressure with the oil drained and the oil plug reinstalled. Then after the test pull the oil plug and see that no antifreeze came out. Having the test completed with the engine as cool as possible is best, like outside overnight. If antifreeze does come out the engine needs at the least, tore down far enough to replace the sleeve o-rings.

Unless you can buy that tractor dirt cheap I would run. If you have to tear into that engine it will be very expensive. Even if it only o ring while you have it apart you might as well overhaul it. The current owner probably already knows what it will cost to fix it, that reason he wants to sell

I am no expert on those engines, but I just know they have a reputation of leaking sleeve o-rings. I know they also had a reputation of being very long lasting otherwise with no particular head gasket problems. I guess I?m just trying to make you aware of other possible issues and as Delta Red pointed out the parts for them tend to be more expensive.

Like some have said here . loader problem is where the hoses plug in easy fix replace both ends with matched sets , the couplers do go bad from time to time . Now as to any coolant leakage there is only one way to find out and that is drop the oil pan and pressure up the cooling system with a cooling system HAND pump to around 15 lbs and then go looking for the drips with a trouble light . Now i myself have not heard of a head gskt problem on the German engines and when someone starts to tell me this they normally get and eye roll . Other possible leakage points are injector cups . Now as to price what it is worth i can not see the tractor first hand . And i am going to give a price if i am doing the touchy feely thing and i am only going to give what it is worth not some over priced out in left field price as i see today .

Have an 826 gear drive and love it. Very handy tractor. Uses little fuel, has good power. Never heard of a head gasket leak much on the German engines. They can have issues with speed o rings like the other poster's stated, but also with the o ring sealing faces in the block. It can all be fixed at a machine shop though. Our 826 is getting tired, I'm gonna rebuild it as a turbo D358. I have a donor DT358 with a rod out of the block for a donor.
