what causes milky white hydrolic fluid

I have a Farmall 300. I can't get the fast hitch to raise. I pulled the resevor plug and found it low and milky. I drained and refilled with new fluid. Still won't work. Any suggestions?

Try pressurizing the reservoir with your air compressor. With the fluid being so low, the pump may have lost prime.

Just holding the lever and waiting with the tractor running at idle may help. I've had them pick up prime after a minute or two like that.

Milky sounds like water. On my 450 the pump was sucking air. Put a clear plastic hose on the suction side of the pump so could see the oil. Ended up putting a extended pipe on the fill hole and adding fluid till it was up to the steering column. It was sucking air around the pipe where the hyd. lines from the spools bolt to the reservoir. The pipe goes through the reservoir to the left side and is pressed in. Taped it with a brass hammer. Took me a month to find it.

You said that you drain and refilled with new fluid. Did you also remove and clean the suction screen? The screen is located on the right side below the fill port held in by 4 bolts.

Definitely water in the system. I can't speak for the 300 but on later machines using Hy-tran, Water in the oil means a filter change as well. Odds are that it is plugged up.
